"Merida is a wonderful colonial Mexican city on the Yucatan peninsula, but far off the tourist route. Every Sunday evening Merida has a folk dance event next to their wonderful central Plaza. What strikes me is that they do this for themselves, not for the few tourists. The crowd of viewers is large and mostly locals. Men and women dance together and separately, a swirl of color and Latin sounds that is quite entrancing and beautiful."
